Adult Learners

FAQs for Adult Learners

How different is it to teach adults than children?

You could say that they are worlds apart, as children are generally following a specific curriculum.

With adults, the challenge is to offer the content corresponding to their interests and maturity, while covering fundamentals. Pronunciation also often requires more specific work, as adults are less flexible than children on that level. Finally, adult learners are often committed for a relatively short term, want to apply what they learn quickly, and are set in the way they memorize and assimilate. Exercises during the lesson as well as practice at home must be interactive at all times.

I need French for an exam, can you help me?

Sure, whatever you are facing: a test, an oral to get a licence recognized in Quebec, an exchange program, etc.
We will assess your needs and the content of what you require to prepare and find a way to reach your goals.

I would like to speak French at work, what do you propose?

Suppose, you realize that speaking French at work would be an asset for you even though your company doesn’t (yet) see the need to finance yourtraining.

Suppose, you notice that you partly miscommunicate with francophone colleagues or customers.

Your needs have to be assessed very precisely and your learning curve will be organized around specific vocabulary, main use of the language (e-mails,telephone conversations, reports, speeches, etc.), and fundamental structures necessary for you to express yourself correctly.

How long is it going to take me to be fluent in French?

There is no direct answer to that question, as implied factors in learning French language are many and varied. In particular:

  • Your level of commitment
  • What kind of learner you are
  • If you are more a “math” or a “language” person
  • Your background: have you learned foreign languages before or been initiated in French before?
  • Your maturity and age

Is it possible to start French at an adult age?

Yes. Your achievement will vary depending on your personality and degree of commitment. Keep in mind that you won’t learn as fast as when you were a child, and you will need to prioritize study time

Is it necessary to study a lot of grammar and verbs to speak French?

It all depends on the level you are willing to reach, but it is true that French is a language with a lot of rules and grammar. You can’t ignore them even when you are only interested in oral communication. For instance, your phrasing will change according to gender and time. So it is very important to focus on your goals and apply the necessary amount of “technique” to achieve them.

What are the necessary qualities to be good at French language?

French requires logic because this language has a lot of rules and ironically, memorization since there are many exceptions. The understanding of general grammar terms used for European languages is also helpful. Above all, consistency and motivation are the keys to success!
